The School of Chinese as a Second Language currently offers three graduate programs:
Master of Teaching Chinese to Speakers of Other Languages (MTCSOL) — a full-time professional degree program.
The program lasts three years for Chinese students and two years for international students.
Doctoral Program in Linguistics and Applied Linguistics — an academic degree program offered on a full-time basis.
Doctoral Program in International Chinese Education (Professional Doctorate) — a part-time professional degree program mainly designed for students with prior teaching experience.
Both doctoral programs are open to international students, and the duration of study is four years for both Chinese and international students.
Although the graduate enrollment scale at the School is relatively small, the training objectives are focused and well-defined, emphasizing refined, individualized education and a balance between theory and practice.
The MTCSOL program aims to cultivate high-level, application-oriented, and internationally minded professionals who possess strong abilities in teaching Chinese as a second language, cross-cultural communication, and cultural dissemination. Graduates are expected to meet the diverse needs of international Chinese language education and perform effectively in various teaching contexts.
Training local Chinese language teachers in different countries is a key component of international Chinese education. The School warmly welcomes international students to pursue degree studies. Currently, international graduate students come from more than a dozen countries, including those in Southeast Asia, the Republic of Korea, Japan, the United States, European countries, Egypt, and Australia. Many graduates return to their home countries to engage in Chinese language teaching or cultural exchange work.
Admission for international master’s and doctoral programs adopts an “Application–Evaluation System”. Detailed admission requirements are available in the Peking University International Student Admissions Guide and the Doctoral Admissions Information of the School of Teaching Chinese as a Second Language(https://www.isd.pku.edu.cn/cn/). Applicants should log in to the Peking University International Student Online Application System, complete the online registration, and submit the required documents. After an initial review, shortlisted applicants will proceed to the comprehensive assessment, which includes both written and oral examinations, usually conducted online.
International students may self-fund their studies or apply for scholarships. Scholarship options include the Chinese Government Scholarship, Beijing Government Scholarship for International Students, Peking University International Student Freshman Scholarship, and the International Chinese Language Teachers Scholarship, among others.
Scholarship evaluation and distribution are carried out in accordance with national and university regulations, following a dynamic review mechanism. For further details, please refer to the relevant web pages.(https://www.isd.pku.edu.cn/cn/scholarship.php)
